LONDON, UK – June 24, 2015 – The first new certification to be introduced by the NACE International Institute has been developed under the leadership of Dr Chris Fowler, Group Technical Director Corrosion and Protection at Exova (now owned by Element Materials Technology).

The new certification programme will provide a globally-recognised personnel qualification standard for the oil and gas production industry.

The new certification, which has been developed in response to industry demand for a recognised certification, examines candidates on their knowledge of the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Standard that is used worldwide to prevent cracking in sour production environments through effective materials selection. A global programme of consultation with leading oil and gas primes is helping to develop the standard, ensuring it draws on the broadest input from the industry. A supporting series of training workshops created around the revised NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 are designed to support a candidate’s attempts to achieve certification by the NACE International Institute. The seminars, offered by NACE International, are aimed at materials and metallurgical engineers in manufacturing and supply chain organisations, as well as oilfield service companies and regulators.

Commenting on this latest innovation Dr Fowler said: “There is increasing demand worldwide for new initiatives to help tackle issues of corrosion and avoid future costly failures of equipment and components. We identified a need to take MR0175 to the next level, updating the original guideline to introduce new testing methods for a wider variety of materials and their suitability to withstand ever harsher environments. “This is just the first stage in what will be an evolving scientific document and the only ISO with a dedicated maintenance panel overseen by a peer group. NACE International’s training workshops will allow us to share knowledge directly with those who can benefit from it most, and when the Institute’s examination is introduced later this year, companies will have proof of compliance through certification.”

The NACE International training seminars, which have been taught by Dr Fowler, have already taken place in Houston, USA and Abu Dhabi, UEA with others planned for India over the summer months, and in the UK towards the end of 2015.
