FCC Votes to Open 6 GHz Band for Wi-Fi 6E Usage
The FCC is broadening the bandwidth for 6 GHz Wi-fi technologies, impacting the future generation of internet devices. Here is what we know so far.
Current status of Wi-fi 6E
The USA Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently voted to open 1,200 MHz of additional bandwidth (6 GHz band 5,925 – 7,125 GHz) which will support Wi-Fi 6 technology.
The addition of the 6 GHz band will support next-generation Wi-Fi devices as well as new connected technology devices for smart homes and the Internet of Things. The use of the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi provides several benefits, including faster connections and lower latency as the band is currently not utilized, thus enabling more efficient broadband connections for consumers in the US.
Wi-Fi 6E products have been successfully tested and certified over the last 12 months in the form of 802.11ax, which implemented OFDMA modulation techniques to increase user data throughput.
It is anticipated that Wi-Fi 6E enabled devices will increase throughout 2020 and adopt the new available band across the US.

The document summarizes the implementation of 6 GHz band and states that “The 6 GHz spectrum is expected to complement 5G wireless service and unleash a wave of innovation for the Internet of Things.”
